Lisbon to Athens

Start your journey in Lisbon, Portugal—from the hilltop heights of the turn-of-the-century funicular to the depths of its soul-stirring fado music. Shop and snack along the colorful quay in Portimao or visit the ancient Moorish capital of Silves before heading to Cádiz where an overnight allows for a visit to national parks and sweet sherry tasting. Arrive in Casablanca’s whitewashed alleyways and make a memorable trip to Marrakech before strolling the beautiful beaches of Tangier, gateway to Africa. On an overnight in Málaga, visit Museo Picasso or venture into the Andalusian countryside to sip some of the world’s best wine in the village of Mijas. The walled town of Cartagena offers windsurfing, snorkeling and sailing for an active day ashore. Next, visit the Catalan metropolis of Barcelona—home to Gaudí’s La Sagrada Familia Cathedral. In Cagliari, Italy, discover the medieval walled Il Castello and Poetto Beach. On to Sardinia, explore the rich underwater world or relax on a white-sand beach. Sip the famous wines of Marsala in Trapani, and take in spectacular views from the medieval hill town of Erice, which only rivals Taormina’s views of the iconic Greek Theater set against sparkling waters of the Ionian Sea. In Greece, stroll Argostoli’s promenade in search of caretta-caretta turtles and savor Kephalonian meat pie. Corfu stuns visitors with its beautiful beaches and small villages while Delphi harkens back to 1400 B.C. when its oracle ruled the world. Transit the small ship only Corinth Canal for the grand finale in Athens—home to the Acropolis, the Plaka, and the Parthenon.

Day 1: Lisbon

The rhythm of Lisbon invites you to join its captivating dance. This splendid capital city on the banks of the Rio Teja offers a warm welcome and an unparalleled blend of architectural styles. Elegant outdoor cafés line the cobbled sidewalks. Turn-of-the-century funiculars climb the scenic hills. Find the UNESCO sites of the Tower of Belem and the Monastery of the Hieronymites. Day 2: Portimao

Follow the savory aroma of sardines grilling to the colorful quay, or let your lust for leather lead you to the old town’s shops and 18th century buildings. In ancient Silves, once a Moorish capital, the castle and cathedral are right next to each other in town. How thoughtful of them to make sightseeing so easy.

Day 3: Gibraltar

It’s an odd bit of Britain here at the toe of Spain, with Barbary apes and miles of tunnels as well as traditional red phone boxes. Legend says Gibraltar was one of the two pillars erected by Hercules to mark the edge of the world. Take the cable car to the top to see if you can see it from here. No, that’s not it. That’s just Africa. What a view.

Day 4: Casablanca

The siren call of Morocco is irresistible. Amid the whitewashed alleyways and stunning ocean views, make time for an optional excursion to the medina of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the souks and medinas in the footsteps of Sir Winston Churchill and Yves St. Laurent, who both called this extraordinary blend of east and west their home.

Day 5: Cádiz

Cádiz is the most southern province of the Iberian Peninsula. It is extremely rich in natural beauty and some of the most important Natural Parks of Spain and Europe are found here including Sierra de Grazalema and los Alcornocales. Both are rich in flora and fauna, including species under threat of extinction. Many birds find their resting and feeding place here just after or before making the jump from or to Africa.

Be sure to include an optional visit to see the brilliant and comprehensive collection of Picasso’s work at Museo Picasso Málaga, a tribute to this artistic genius in the city of his birth. Or you may choose to opt for a visit to the beautiful village of Mijas, where picturesque Andalusian country life creates some of the world’s best wines.

Day 9: Cartagena

The walled town of Cartagena is a popular seaport with a large naval shipyard. The seashore offers a wide range of activities from windsurfing to good snorkeling to sailing. From Cartagena you can easily explore the ancient city of Murcia, the coastal resorts of Mazarrón, Cala Cortina, and Cabo de Palos or a little further north, the world famous resort of Mar Menor.

Day 11: Barcelona

The old meets the new in this sunny Catalan metropolis, where narrow alleyways contrast with grand boulevards, trendy cuisine meets homemade tapas, and everywhere you’re greeted by the warm, welcoming smiles of the fashionable locals. Don’t miss UNESCO sites like the mind-boggling architecture of Antoni Gaudí or La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, with its eight decorative spires soaring hundreds of feet into the sky.

Day 13: Cagliari

Cagliari is known for Il Castello, a hilltop medieval walled quarter majestically watching over the town. Beautiful Poetto Beach sits on the edge of town with sparkling blue waters and lively activity. Other sites to see include the 13^th century Cathedral di Santa Maria, the Torre Dell’Elefante and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari with its displays of bronze objects, Roman ceramics and artifacts from the Nuragic age to the Byzantine era.

Day 14: Trapani

At once ancient and contemporary, Trapani is a city of contrasts. From the salt marshes that produce much of the Mediterranean’s signature colored salts, to the intricate mosaics of Mozia and the famous wines of Marsala, to the best view in all of Sicily from the medieval hill town of Erice where the colorful gardens are rivaled only by the cannolis for pure sensory delight. The line of 17th century windmills, still hard at work in ancient Phoenician salt marshes beckons you to return to Trapani again and again.

Day 15: Messina (Taormina)

The cobblestone streets of Messina, Sicily, are the perfect launching point for an optional visit to nearby Taormina. Stroll along flower-filled streets in search of a delightful lunch or an artist’s palette of colorful gelati. The ancient Greek Theater is an ideal place to sit back and admire shimmering waters below and Mount Etna, languidly smoking in the distance.

Day 16: Argostoli

The active harbor of Argostoli features a long promenade offering excellent opportunities to see the main attraction here – the caretta-caretta turtles who feed at the nearby lagoon or around the fishing boats who toss their unwanted catch to them. There is a variety of restaurants and cafes to try the delicious Kephalonian meat pie.

Day 17: Katakolon

Charming and scenic Katakolon is the gateway to Olympia, the original home of the Olympic Games and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can visit this memorable site only 30 minutes away and see the fertile Peloponnese valleys along the way, full of strawberries, tomatoes, corn and olive trees.

Day 18: Chania

Hints of Florence, Venice, and Istanbul are everywhere in Chania, beginning with the old Venetian harbor. Go ashore and explore the harbor from the Arabian Lighthouse to the Kioutsouk Hassan Mosque. The architecture is never boring, with Turkish domes interspersed with intricate wrought iron balconies. Find the Venetian Donkey Steps at Plateia Aghiou, with their double-wide steps. Take time out in one of the picturesque tavernas for some dácos (Cretan bread) and mizithra cheese.

Day 19: Athens

With 3,000 years of history, you can’t turn around in Athens without encountering the past. The Acropolis, a UNESCO site, the Plaka, and the Acropolis Museum are must-sees. But leave time if you can to climb Pnyx Hill for photos of the Parthenon at sunset, to buy your own set of Greek komboloi (worry beads), and to explore the metro stations that serve as mini-museums for the relics that are constantly being unearthed.
